NomNomNow: Fresh and Healthy Cat Food Review

We aren’t sure how our fur baby started his life, but we found him when he was between 6 and 8 weeks old in a dumpster outside of a fast food place. Once we got home, Antonio (our cat) was introduced to some on hand canned tuna. Eventually, we switched him from wet kitten food to adult kibble.

When we were given a chance to try NomNomNow, we jumped at it! There was so much in the news about chemicals in pet foods, but we were still not sure about trying fresh pet food.

Sign Up and Delivery

Sign up was a breeze. I answered a few questions about my cat Antonio, and then Nom Nom Now was on its way. Some questions threw me for a loop though. For instance, I have no idea how much Antonio weighed, I still don’t. But, I put in that I wanted him to maintain his weight, and that was the end of it.

Delivery came surprisingly quickly and in a temperate controlled box. I was excited, and the unboxing was pretty fantastic. There was a pamphlet that spelled out what everything in the box was and how to use.

I loved that the information walked me through transitioning Antonio to fresh food and what to expect. I wasn’t sure what would happen because he acts exactly how you imagine any spoiled cat to react to anything. Lots of eye-rolling, and tail twitching when he even bothers to look over at you.

First Impressions

Right away Antonio loved it. The box came with Chicken Chow-Meow and a few packets of Flavorful Fish Feast. All the food packets were marked, easy to open and stored standing upright, so they didn’t take up a lot of fridge space.

But, the box also contained “mix-ins” to help reluctant cats switch their diet, some broth, and chicken jerky treats. I went against the recommended transition the first night to see how Antonio would respond, and it was all positive.

After Antonio got the first taste, I went to the recommended transition counter that comes in the first order. But, he brought out the sass and ignored his food bowl for a day and a half. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not, but we live in a very cat-friendly neighborhood. It wouldn’t surprise me if he found dinner at a neighbor’s house for the night.

When I saw his attitude towards the mix of kibble and NomNomNow, I ditched the mix and let him have the fresh food as a full meal. He loved it, but I was concerned he wasn’t getting enough and kept dry food down for about a week. It went mostly untouched, and I eventually picked it up.

How it Compares

I didn’t know that my cat was a picky eater until we tried fresh food from NomNomNow. I also didn’t know how enthusiastic he was about food. With NomNomNow I saw Antonio more often through the day and especially when it was feeding time. He’d wait patiently by his bowl.

One of the reasons that led us to put him out during the day was that he started hacking up hairballs. His coat took on a better quality after about a week of NomNomNow. It’s probably safe to say that anything would be better for his coat than kibble, but this helped the furball issue, and he can happily come in and out of the house as he pleases now.

I haven’t tried other fresh food products, but I constantly joked with my husband that our cat was eating like a feline king. We both check the labels on everything we eat, and we realized that this habit needed to spill over into our cat’s food as well. I didn’t know before that there were a ton of chemical and preservatives in dry cat food, but I thought that whole food cat diets weren’t realistic.

The ingredients listed on every packet of food were simple. There was no “chicken meal” or “byproduct” anywhere. Everything in the ingredients list was things that I would use to cook in my kitchen

Antonio has never been a particularly lazy cat, but I noticed that the summer heat didn’t seem to bother him so much and he was more likely to socialize after switching to NOM NOM NOW. It could be that he just wanted more chicken jerky treats, which we were very generous with. Antonio is a cat that isn’t shy to take a bribe.

Treats for a Salty Cat

The treats were a winner for me. Antonio is known to hide when we have people over and hold grudges if he’s unhappy with pretty much anything. But, the treats made it a lot easier to coax him out of hiding and to get him to socialize more often.

The jerky again just had me amazed with the ingredients list. It was just chicken. That was it, strips of dehydrated chicken that he could bite at and tote around as he pleased.

The Bottom Line

The ingredients list is what made this service stand out for me. Everything on every package was simple. The chicken was chicken, not meal or byproduct.

I loved having NomNomNow and saw firsthand that what I was feeding my cat did make a difference in his demeanor, and fur quality. He hasn’t been hacking up so many furballs, although the occasional one still surfaces. With treats, we’ve baited him into giving us more attention which is a great plus if you have a snobby cat.
