Turmeric, also known as Indian saffron, is a spice that imparts a yellow color to curry dishes. Curcumin, the active ingredient found in Turmeric, is commonly found in veterinary-approved supplements for dogs due to its natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Both researchers and nutritionists have praised the herb for its medicinal benefits on both human and pet minds and bodies.

Turmeric for Dogs: The Health Benefits

1. Reduce/Prevent Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation can be beneficial for the body in the short term as it helps to fight off foreign pathogens. However, when inflammation persists for a long period, it can contribute to various chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, dementia, and degenerative conditions. Research suggests that Curcumin, the active ingredient found in Turmeric, may be as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs in reducing inflammation without side effects. Turmeric can be particularly beneficial for dogs experiencing joint inflammation or arthritis. This is the reason why turmeric is included as an active ingredient in certain joint care chews for dogs.

2. Reduce Pain

Turmeric can be particularly beneficial for dogs experiencing joint inflammation or arthritis. Its active ingredient, Curcumin, has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate pain and damage caused by conditions such as arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and injuries. This is why it is included as an active ingredient in certain joint care chews for dogs.

3. Cardiovascular Benefits:

Curcumin is believed to act as a blood thinner that reduces the risk of blood clots and helps to eliminate excess cholesterol. It also improves the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels and aids in regulating blood pressure and blood clotting.

4. Digestive Aid:

In order for healthy digestion to occur, the liver must produce bile to break down fats. Curcumin has been proven to stimulate bile production, which can help to prevent liver, gallbladder, and intestinal issues. It can be particularly beneficial for dogs that are underweight, extremely active, or pregnant/nursing as they require more fat in their diets.

5. Cancer Treatment:

Studies conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) have shown promising results in using Curcumin as a treatment for cancer. It affects cancer growth, development, and spread at the molecular level. Additionally, it has been shown to inhibit the growth of blood vessels within tumors and contribute to the death of cancer cells.

6. Brain Health:

The rates of neurodegenerative diseases in India, where Turmeric is consumed regularly, are considered low in comparison to western nations. This may be due, in part, to Curcumin, which crosses the blood-brain barrier to reduce inflammation and oxidative damage. A study by NCBI also showed it to be beneficial in clearing amyloid plaques in the brain associated with dementia.
