The Morkie is a cute non-shedding breed that’s a cross between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltese.
This breed finds its origins in the United States of America and is a small one. Since its a cross between two breeds that require a lot of grooming, it is no surprise that the Morkie needs regular grooming as well.
However, grooming costs alone add up and can burn a large hole in your pocket.
So, it is a good idea to groom your Morkie at home—especially if you’re on a budget—and save the additional costs of owning the doggy. Over time, it can save thousands of dollars.
In this post, I’ll teach you how to groom a Morkie the right way.
Without any further ado, let’s jump right in, shall we?
Steps You Need to Follow!
In this section of the blog post, I will go through the steps you need to follow to groom your Morkie and make your furry friend look prim and proper.
Daily Grooming Needs
Since Morkies have regular grooming needs, it is always a good idea to establish a routine in puppyhood so that the dog can adapt accordingly. You can start grooming your furry friend as early as when he’s three weeks old.
This ensures that your dog knows what to expect and when to expect it.
Older dogs need to be eased into grooming routines, while puppies are easygoing and easier to work with.

Brushing Every day Keeps the Hair Away
Even though the Morkie is a non-shedding dog, it doesn’t mean that it won’t shed at all. Morkies shed as much as humans do. So, don’t be surprised if you find your Morkie’s hair everywhere.
One way to tackle the hair fall and avoid matting is to brush your dog’s hair every day. It can be a bonding experience for the two of you and something relaxing for your dog.
Plus, your Morkie will look cute if you brush him daily!
Trim When You Need To
Morkies have a long fur which requires regular trimming. Usually the hair on the Morkie’s forehead tends to cover the dog’s eyes which makes it difficult for the furbaby to see.
The hairs may even go into your Morkie’s eyes.
To trim this hair, the following are the steps:
- Use a comb to untangle your dog’s hair
- Ensure that you’ve removed all tangles and mats
- If your dog has mats that aren’t removable, cut them out using scissors
- Use small grooming scissors to trim the hair to an adequate length
You may have to trim this hair once every two weeks. So, make sure you add this to your schedule.
The Eyes Need to Be Looked After as Well!
You need to clean the area around your furry friend’s eyes and clean away his tears to prevent the unwanted growth of bacteria. Make sure to clean your dog’s eyes on a daily basis with a soft wet cloth with warm water.
Gently run over the cloth over your dog’s eyes to clean the tear stains. If your dog tears throughout the day, then, repeat the process whenever necessary.
Trim Around the Ears
One of the most important parts of the dog’s body that the owners forget to groom are the ears.
You should clean the inner parts of your dog’s ears using warm water and a cotton ball to get rid of the dirt and the wax. This should ideally be done every two to three days. However, make sure that you don’t insert the ball in your dog’s ears.
You also need to trim the area around your dog’s ears!
Brush the area around your furry friend’s ears and trim using scissors or trimming shears if necessary, Make sure that you don’t cut the cartilage as it can be really painful for your furry friend. You need to do this once in every two weeks for best results.
Wash Your Doggy
Washing your dog is really important to keep the dirt away and make your dog look fluffy and shiny.
Ideally, you should bath your dog after every three to six weeks, or in case your dog decided to run through muddy puddles. You can shampoo and condition your dog at home using a reliable and natural shampoo.
Your dog may also need to get his body groomed.
It is best that you let a professional take care of that once in every three to four months. You can do that at your home as well but, you won’t get a ‘clean’ look—especially if you’re new to it.
Following are some tips on grooming your dog’s body:
- Always cut in the direction of the hair as it provides softer lines
- Use a good trimmer and adjust according to your needs
- Make sure to comb your dog’s fir first to ensure that there aren’t any mats
- Trim the mats using scissors
- Don’t forget the tail! You can trim it using scissors
Cut Your Morkie’s Nails
Trimming your dog’s nails is also important. You should start trimming your furry friend’s nails during puppyhood so that your dog doesn’t get scared.
Long nails can make it hard for your dog to walk or run on the floor. Nails also have a tendency to split which can cause your furbaby to be in a lot of pain. So, it is a good idea to trim your dog’s nails once every two weeks.
Final Words
Morkies need a lot of grooming to keep up with their killer looks.
So, you’ll have to make sure to have a good grooming schedule for your furbaby. Some things need to be done daily, while others need to be done less regularly. But, being on a schedule will help you keep your dog looking prim and proper at all times.
